Tension has flared between the BGB and India’s BSF at the Ramrampur border in Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj upazila over an attempt to push an elderly man into Bangladesh — with the BGB answering a BSF order to fire with the warning: “We have bullets too; do you think we will sit idle?”
At about 5am on Wednesday, members of India’s Nandirchar BSF camp tried to force a 60-year-old man into Bangladesh at the Ramrampur border. Detecting the attempt, members of Jamalpur 35 BGB and local residents resisted. Facing that resistance, the man took position in the no-man’s-land. A 30-minute flag meeting between the BGB and BSF failed to persuade the BSF to take the stateless man back, and an altercation began. At one point the BSF pushed the elderly man toward Bangladesh; the BGB pushed him back toward the Indian side. When a BSF subedar then ordered firing, BGB members issued a counter-warning: “We have bullets too — we will not sit idle. What do you mean, shoot? Why did you order shooting?” Local residents, sticks in hand, shouted warnings at the BSF alongside the BGB. Unable to enter Bangladesh, the man remains in the no-man’s-land, and tension between the two forces continues.
Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, commander of Jamalpur 35 BGB, said the BSF pushed a man to the zero line from India in the morning, but the BGB, with local residents, resisted. Efforts to resolve the matter through a meeting have not yet succeeded, he said, adding that the BGB remains on maximum alert to prevent push-ins.
