College student electrocuted in Anwara

Abdul Hannan Shah (22), a college student, has died of electrocution while cutting a betel-nut tree in Chattogram’s Anwara upazila. The accident occurred at the Shah house in North Guapanchak in Bairag union of the upazila at about 11am on Thursday (11 June). Abdul Hannan Shah was the son of Abdul Gaffar Shah of the area and a degree first-year student at Anwara Government College.

According to family and local sources, Hannan was home on a break for examinations. On Thursday morning he climbed a betel-nut tree beside the house to cut it, and at one point was electrocuted when he came into contact with an electric wire next to the tree. Local people rescued him and rushed him to the Anwara upazila health complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead. His cousin, Md Imran Hossain, said Hannan lived at his cousin’s shop and had come home for a few days for examinations; with no exam on Thursday, he went to cut the betel-nut tree in the morning and met with the accident.

Anwara upazila health and family planning officer Dr Mahatab Uddin Chowdhury said: “A young man was brought to hospital in an electrocuted state. After examination he was declared dead. The body was then handed over to the family.”
