A young man publicly applied sindur — the vermilion mark associated with Hindu marriage — to his girlfriend’s forehead at the Jashore court premises. Unable to accept the gesture, the young woman reacted angrily, and a heated argument broke out between the two that escalated into a scuffle.

The incident took place on Thursday (July 9) afternoon at the Jashore court premises. A court inspector later took the pair to the court’s general recording officer (GRO) room, and in the evening Kotwali police brought both to the station.

The young woman is from Shalikha upazila in Magura district and the young man from Narikelbaria village in Bagharpara upazila of Jashore.

According to police, the two had been in a relationship for nine years. In the afternoon they were near the old, disused district judge’s court in Jashore when an argument began between them over some matter.

At one point the man suddenly took out vermilion he had kept in a polythene bag and applied it to the woman’s forehead. Angered, she protested, and a bout of grappling and scuffling followed.

A lawyer who witnessed the incident informed the court inspector. Court inspector Imdadul Haque quickly reached the scene, brought the situation under control and took the pair to the GRO room, before they were handed over to Kotwali police in the evening.

Imdadul Haque said the situation had become heated and that the two were taken to the GRO room in the interest of maintaining law and order, before being handed to Kotwali police.

Masum Khan, the officer-in-charge of Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station, said both had been brought to the station and were later released into the custody of their guardians.
