Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has filed a contempt-of-court petition against the government at the Supreme Court, alleging it failed to transfer Imran Khan to the specific private hospital named in the top court’s order.

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja went to the Supreme Court on Saturday, where he filed the petition jointly with Imran Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, and lawyer Uzair Bhandari. The Supreme Court had ordered on Tuesday that Imran Khan be transferred to the private Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad.

Earlier, in the early hours of Friday, Imran Khan was taken under tight security from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). He was returned to prison after doctors there declared him physically fit.

Defending the government’s decision, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said crowds of PTI leaders and activists gathered outside and along the route to Shifa International Hospital had created a major security risk. He said that was why the decision was changed at the last minute and Imran Khan was taken to the government-run PIMS instead.

Tarar claimed, however, that doctors from Shifa Hospital were also present at PIMS.

PTI’s petition seeks legal action for contempt of court against those responsible for violating the Supreme Court’s Tuesday order. It also asks that they be issued show-cause notices and directed to appear in court in person.

The petition asks that those responsible be found guilty of contempt of court and punished under the law. It also requests that Imran Khan be swiftly transferred to Shifa International Hospital for treatment there.

PTI has also requested the appointment of a court official or a local commission to ensure the Supreme Court’s order is carried out.
