Some bank branches across Bangladesh will open Tuesday on a limited schedule during the seven-day Eid ul-Adha holiday closure, the central bank said, to clear garment-sector wage and bonus payments and keep import and export operations running.
Office hours at the open branches will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with customer transactions allowed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to Bangladesh Bank.
Bangladesh Bank’s Supervisory Data Management and Analytics Department (SDMAD) issued a circular on the arrangement on May 18.
The circular said banks will remain closed from May 25 through May 31 in line with the holiday schedule announced by the public administration ministry. But the central bank put special arrangements in place so banks could process wages, bonuses and other allowances for garment-sector workers during the closure.
Under the circular, commercial bank branches tied to the garment industry in Dhaka city, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Bhaluka, Narayanganj and Chattogram will operate on a limited basis on May 25 and 26.
Bank branches, sub-branches and booths at the country’s seaports, land ports and airports will continue to run their usual 24-hour service seven days a week. The central bank also directed banks to keep limited import-export banking running during the Eid holidays, except on Eid day itself.
Officers and staff working on the holidays will receive their scheduled allowances under the existing rules, the directive said.
