Tehran has strongly condemned the British decision to declare Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a “security threat.” Iran’s foreign ministry has termed the move “unjustified” and “irresponsible.” Al Jazeera reported on Tuesday (July 14) that Iran’s foreign ministry made clear that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was an official part of the country’s armed forces, and Tehran strongly alleged that by targeting a state institution in this way the United Kingdom had clearly violated international law.
Earlier, last Monday, the United Kingdom banned the IRGC and an affiliated group. The ban was imposed under a new special power whose main aim is to prevent any foreign state from using a proxy for activities such as surveillance or sabotage in another country. Iran, however, has consistently denied any such use of proxies. Iran has long had extreme tension and hostile relations with the United States and Israel.
