The Disaster Management and Relief Ministry says 30 people have died in Chattogram division over the past five days from disasters caused by heavy rain, hill floods and landslides.
The ministry said emergency relief, including cash, rice and baby food, has been allocated by the government for people in the affected areas.
On Thursday (July 9), the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry released its latest report on damage in Chattogram division and the steps taken by district administrations.
The report shows the tourist district of Cox’s Bazar suffered the highest number of deaths, with 19 people killed there.
Chattogram and Bandarban districts each recorded five deaths, while one death was reported in Rangamati district. No deaths have been reported so far in Khagrachhari district.
A total of 1,427 shelters have been prepared across the five districts for people at risk from flooding and landslides.
Of these, 8,340 people have taken shelter in 411 centers in Chattogram, 1,206 people in 21 centers in Rangamati, 1,755 people in 135 centers in Khagrachhari, and 2,173 people in 220 centers in Bandarban.
However, while 640 shelters have been prepared in Cox’s Bazar district, no one is currently sheltering there. The ministry said special allocations were made in two rounds on July 7 and July 9 to assist those affected.
On July 7, a total of Tk 5 million in cash — Tk 1 million for each of the five districts (Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban) — and a total of 1,000 metric tons of rice, 200 metric tons per district, were allocated.
Later, on July 9, special assistance for children totaling Tk 7.5 million was allocated — Tk 2.5 million for Chattogram, Tk 2 million for Cox’s Bazar, and Tk 1 million each for Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.
On the same day, a total of 1,150 metric tons of rice was allocated — 300 metric tons for Chattogram, 250 metric tons for Cox’s Bazar, and 200 metric tons each for the remaining three districts.
Extensive areas across these five districts of Chattogram division have been flooded over the past several days due to continuous rain and hill floods coming down from upstream. Landslides in various locations have caused deaths and left many families in precarious conditions.
District administrations have been directed to take steps to address the situation.
Regular loudspeaker announcements and awareness campaigns are being carried out to quickly relocate people living at the foot of hills and in at-risk areas to safe locations.
The report also said arrangements are being made to ensure safe drinking water, improved sanitation, and three daily meals, including baby food, for those sheltering in the various centers.
