Could regional instability spread?

The conflict between Iran and the United States is increasingly taking on a regional character. Beyond that, the same weapon the United States has used to blockade Iran’s economy, Iran is now using against the world.

As a result, there is a growing risk of fresh instability spreading across the Middle East and surrounding regions, says defense analyst and retired Romanian navy officer Alexandru Hudistenu.

Al Jazeera reported Tuesday, August 18, that Hudistenu said: “While the war itself remains confined to a specific area, the entire region is essentially caught up in the conflict.”

He said Yemen’s Houthis have expanded the conflict’s reach to the Red Sea and have threatened shipping bound for Saudi Arabia. Attacks were also reported in the Caspian Sea a few weeks ago, creating a kind of link between this wider region and the theater of the Russia-Ukraine war.

According to Hudistenu, the instability created by the US-Israeli war on Iran since February could spread to other regions and give rise to fresh conflicts, potentially producing “a situation of uncertainty and instability.”

He said it would not be wrong to describe this situation as a new security reality.

Hudistenu further said the military measures the United States has taken so far have failed to resolve the core complexity of the situation, particularly failing to change anything about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Because of this, he said, Washington has now taken a “strategic pause” to reassess its options.

In his words, blockading Iran’s ports was the United States’ most significant step since the active phase of strikes began.

Even so, a new risk has emerged in the process. “The same weapon the United States is using to blockade Iran’s economy,” Hudistenu said, “Iran is now using against the world.”
