Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said BNP delivers more than it promises. “BNP makes commitments and keeps them. It announces an election manifesto and implements it. It gives 31 points and fulfills up to 32 — that is BNP,” he said.

He was speaking at a ceremony disbursing retirement and welfare benefits to non-government teachers at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Saturday.

The home minister said teacher retirement benefits were not in the party’s election manifesto. “That makes it point 32. And providing school uniforms is point 33,” he said.

Highlighting the education legacy of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Salahuddin Ahmed said all initiatives for vocational and skills-based education were taken during his time. He noted that Khaleda Zia had established the teacher retirement benefit system.

He said each retiring teacher would receive Tk 5 to 7 lakh (about $4,200 to $5,800) in benefits. “For a poor school teacher sitting in a village, this means a great deal,” he said. The payments are being made digitally to bank accounts with no bribes required at any stage.
