Nathan Thomas, an 18-year-old from the US state of Florida, has entered Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest college professor.
According to Guinness World Records, Nathan was appointed to a teaching post at Miami Dade College in Florida in August 2023, at just 18 years and 346 days old.
Nathan is an exceptionally gifted engineering student. He enrolled in college at just 10 through a “dual-enrolment” programme and transferred to Florida International University at 14. He then completed a master’s degree in electrical engineering at just 18.
Before Nathan, the record for the world’s youngest male professor had been held for 306 years by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor in 1717 at the age of 19.
Among men and women combined, Nathan is 16 days younger than the previous record-holder, Alia Sabur, who in 2008 became the youngest female professor at 18 years and 362 days.
Nathan is currently studying for a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami’s School of Law while teaching courses online. He is due to complete the law degree in 2028.
Nathan said that in future he wanted to work on intellectual property law with an emphasis on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics sectors.
Speaking to Guinness World Records, Nathan said engineering had taught him to solve complex problems by breaking them into small, well-organised parts, and that he was applying the same method to his law studies.
