Bangladesh measles outbreak claims 7 more lives in 24 hours

DHAKA — Bangladesh recorded seven more deaths from measles or measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours, bringing the confirmed-case toll to 70 since mid-March, the Directorate General of Health Services said Thursday.

The information came in a news release from the directorate’s control room. It said 1,363 suspected measles cases were reported in the past 24 hours, pushing the total to 54,419 between March 15 and May 14. Confirmed cases rose by 155 in the same 24 hours, with the cumulative total reaching 7,305.

Between March 15 and May 14, 39,160 patients with suspected measles were admitted to hospitals. Over the same period, 34,968 recovered and were discharged, the directorate said.

Six of the past day’s deaths were suspected measles cases, bringing the suspected-measles death toll to 369 since March 15. One confirmed-measles death was recorded in the past 24 hours, raising that count to 70.
