Shaking off the failure of the 2026 World Cup, German football is set to enter a new era. Following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, Jürgen Klopp has been appointed head coach of the national team. The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed a contract with the experienced 59-year-old coach through the 2030 World Cup.
At this World Cup the four-time world champions bowed out in the round of 32, losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout. Germany then terminated Nagelsmann’s contract by mutual consent. The appointment of Klopp was announced formally today. The former Liverpool mastermind will officially begin the new chapter on August 15.
Klopp could not contain his excitement at this historic moment for German football. After signing the contract he said: “The national team can unite Germans in a way nothing else can. And that is what makes this job so special to me. We will work together with humility and patience. We will build a team that fights for one another and brings back the joy of football.”
The president of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorf, confirmed that Klopp had been their first choice from the start. Praising Klopp, he said: “Jürgen Klopp is the embodiment of passion, credibility and the ability to inspire others. After Nagelsmann’s resignation he was our first choice without any hesitation.”
The association’s vice-president, Hans-Joachim Watzke, said on the matter: “To me Jürgen is one of the best coaches in the world. He has a great ability to develop players and to bind a whole nation together. And that is exactly what the German team needs most right now.”
Joining Klopp’s coaching staff as assistants are Pepijn Lijnders, Peter Krawietz and Sven Bender. Klopp earlier won two German Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund. In the next chapter he brought Liverpool the taste of a Champions League title and, after a long 30 years, the English Premier League crown.
Klopp’s international debut in the Germany dugout will come on September 24, in a UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands.
