Five more die with measles symptoms in Bangladesh

Five more people have died with measles symptoms across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a bulletin on measles issued Monday, covering the 24-hour period from 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday.

The DGHS said a total of 938 people have died from measles or with measles symptoms since March 15, of whom 839 died with measles symptoms and 99 died of confirmed measles.

Dhaka division has recorded the highest number of deaths with measles symptoms, at 372, followed by Sylhet division with 141. Barishal has recorded 49 deaths, Chattogram 64, Khulna 33, Mymensingh 74, Rajshahi 92 and Rangpur division 14.

DGHS data show 1,149 new people developed measles symptoms nationwide in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of people who have shown measles symptoms since March 15 to 150,652. Over the same period, 83 people were newly confirmed to have measles, bringing the total number of confirmed measles cases since March 15 to 18,487. The DGHS’s regular statistics do not break down the deaths by age. Epidemiologists say measles can affect people of any age, but children are most commonly affected.
