Measles deaths rise by 8 in a day; cases reach 7,150 since March

DHAKA — Eight more people have died from measles or measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, with 1,615 new cases recorded, the Directorate General of Health Services said.

The figures were released in a statement Wednesday from the directorate’s control room.

Three deaths from measles-like symptoms were recorded in Sylhet division in the past day, the directorate said. Two more were reported in Mymensingh division, and one each in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions, for a total of eight deaths in a day. Since March 15, the country has recorded 432 deaths from measles or its symptoms.

Across the country, 126 new measles cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours, and another 1,489 people showed symptoms of the disease. Since March 15, a total of 53,056 people have shown measles symptoms, with 7,150 confirmed cases.

According to the directorate, 38,054 people have been hospitalized with measles symptoms across the country between March 15 and Wednesday.
