News has emerged of the tragic strangulation-killing of a school teacher and his family at a home in Rangpur. At the same time, doctors in Dhaka and Mymensingh have also been attacked and subjected to extortion demands.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has expressed concern over the country’s law-and-order situation. He said the home minister must take responsibility for this.

For readers, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s Facebook post is reproduced in full below:

“Last night, the bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty, a former teacher at Rangpur Zilla School, his wife and their two children were recovered from a home in Machhuapara, Rangpur city. They are reported to have been killed by strangulation.

The deceased are: former Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty; their son; and their daughter, Agami Chakraborty.

The way this entire family was so brutally killed is extremely condemnable, painful and horrifying.

Social crime, murder and terrorism have recently taken a serious turn in this country. In Dhaka, a doctor was subjected to an extortion demand in dollars and then attacked and seriously injured. In Mymensingh, a veterinarian was similarly attacked after an extortion demand.

And now, most recently, this tragic incident in Rangpur.

These three incidents alone, among countless others, make clear how severely the country’s law-and-order situation has deteriorated, and how frightening a turn it has taken. The public is anxious. The public wants this resolved.

The home minister must take responsibility for this. The passive role of the law enforcement agencies has left the public alarmed. In particular, the miscreants behind this horrifying incident in Rangpur must be tracked down quickly and given exemplary punishment.

One crime after another keeps happening. But victims are not getting proper justice. The prolonged delays in court proceedings are leaving the public deeply frustrated. The public must be protected from this frustration.

So rather than simply looking on at the government’s failures, we need to build social awareness among ourselves. At the same time, the government needs to be compelled to overcome its failures.

Let us all come together to build social awareness and protect the beloved people of our country from the hands of these crimes. May Allah protect us all from the hands of these crimes. Amin.”
