Argentina received welcome news ahead of the World Cup knockout round, with center-back Cristian Romero returning to training after recovering from a knee injury.
Argentina face Cape Verde in the round of 32 on July 4 at Miami Stadium. TyC Sports reported that Romero participated in team training and passed all physical tests, though coach Lionel Scaloni has not yet confirmed his final decision ahead of the last training session.
Team sources told TyC Sports that Scaloni wants to bring Romero back into the starting lineup in place of Nicolas Otamendi.
Romero injured his right knee during the second half of the match against Austria. He was rested as a precaution against Jordan. The Tottenham Hotspur defender had also suffered a lateral ligament sprain in the same knee during the English Premier League season.
While Romero’s return appears likely, Scaloni still faces decisions in attack. Who will partner Lionel Messi up front remains the biggest question, with Lautaro Martinez holding a slight edge over Julian Alvarez.
At left-back, Nicolas Tagliafico has recovered from a calf injury and played against Jordan, but Facundo Medina’s recent form could earn him a starting spot, according to TyC Sports.
In midfield, Scaloni’s thinking appears clearer, with Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, and Enzo Fernandez expected to continue.
