74 more children hospitalized with measles symptoms in Sylhet

SYLHET — Another 74 children were hospitalized with measles symptoms in the Sylhet region over the past 24 hours, though no deaths or laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded during the period, the Health Directorate’s divisional office said Thursday.

The outbreak in the northeastern division is not abating, officials said. From Jan. 1 to May 14, the number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases stood at 148, including 16 in Habiganj (two of them rubella), 16 in Moulvibazar, 74 in Sunamganj and 42 in Sylhet district.

Among the 74 children admitted with suspected measles in the past 24 hours, 25 were taken to Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, 22 to Osmani Medical College Hospital, one to Ragib Rabeya Medical Hospital, two to Park View Medical Hospital, two to Mount Adora Hospital, one to the Fenchuganj upazila health complex, three to the Baniachong upazila health complex, 13 to Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital, one to the Shantiganj upazila health complex, one to the Jamalganj upazila health complex and three to Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital.

A total of 293 suspected measles patients are currently being treated at various hospitals across the Sylhet division. The highest count, 99, is at Shahid Shamsuddin Hospital, followed by 61 at Osmani Medical College Hospital, two at Sylhet Women’s Medical College Hospital, one at Al Haramain Hospital, 10 at Lions Children Hospital, six at Ragib Rabeya Medical College Hospital, four at Mount Adora Hospital, six at North East Hospital, four at Park View Hospital, two at the Fenchuganj upazila health complex, two at the Beanibazar upazila health complex, seven at the Ajmiriganj upazila health complex, four at the Bahubal upazila health complex, seven at the Dirai upazila health complex, five at the Shantiganj upazila health complex, 52 at Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital, one at the Jamalganj upazila health complex, three at the Jagannathpur upazila health complex, one at the Chhatak upazila health complex, one at the Bishwamvarpur upazila health complex, 14 at Habiganj District Sadar Hospital and 12 at Moulvibazar District Sadar Hospital.

Dr. Nure Alam Shamim, the acting director of the Health Directorate’s Sylhet divisional office, said the patient load was steadily increasing but the outbreak would begin to ease once the vaccination campaign took effect. The vaccination drive will run through May 20, he said, urging parents to make sure their children receive the measles shot.
