The head of a household, his wife and a domestic worker were found murdered in a home in the Rajbari Mitali residential area of Raynagar, Sylhet city. Police recovered three bodies from the home around noon on Wednesday.
The victims were Abdus Sattar Mia, 82, owner of Mitali 111 Nikunj Villa; his wife Suraiya Begum, 72; and domestic worker Tahmina, 15. Police could not initially confirm why they were killed. Sattar’s home district was Beanibazar; one son and one daughter live in the United States and two daughters in the United Kingdom. He lived at the home with his wife.
After receiving a report, police broke open the door to Sattar’s second-floor room and found the three bodies. Police said they had been killed with sharp weapons. Residents gathered after news spread.
OC Mainul Zakir of Kotwali police station said the motive was not immediately known. Sylhet Metropolitan Police commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim and a special police team visited the scene.
The commissioner said police had received information that blood was leaking from behind the locked door of the second-floor flat of the three-storey house. After opening it, they found the bodies. He said the victims had been attacked with sharp weapons.
He said investigators were considering two possibilities: intruders may have entered to rob the home, or the killings may have stemmed from a land dispute.
