The case of the disappearance of Shahriar Ahmed Imon, a 22-year-old Bangladeshi student, in Larnaca, Cyprus, has taken a new turn in the country’s ongoing investigation. After nine days of searching, the case has now become a murder investigation.

Officers of the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are investigating the incident. They said that, while investigating the abduction case of Shahriar Ahmed Imon, they had gathered important evidence against a 22-year-old foreign national.

In initial questioning, the suspect admitted to involvement in killing Shahriar, police said. He took officers to a specific spot near the Kofinou migrant reception centre and a local slaughterhouse, and the body was recovered from there.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday. He is due to be produced at the Larnaca District Court on Monday for a remand hearing.

A forensic team has cordoned off the site where the body was recovered and is continuing its investigation to gather detailed evidence.

Shahriar had enrolled a few months ago at a private university in the city of Larnaca and lived in a flat in the Oroklini area. On June 12, he told his flatmates that he was going to join work at a factory in Kofinou; it was his first day of work.

He left home at around 6:30 p.m. that day, and there was no trace of him afterwards. On the night of June 12, Shahriar had last sent a friend a digital location pin, and shortly afterwards the signal from his phone went dead.

Police are giving greater weight to financial gain as the main motive for the killing, and an investigation is under way to determine the cause.
