CHOUGACHHA, Jashore — The government must implement the referendum verdict, Prof. Golam Rasul, the Jamaat-e-Islami leader for Jashore district and member of Parliament for Jashore-4, said at a party gathering on Saturday. “No referendum has ever been annulled in this country before. So why is confusion being created over annulling this one?” he said.

He was speaking as chief guest at a meeting of Jamaat-e-Islami members of the Chougachha upazila branch. The gathering was held Saturday afternoon at the upazila Jamaat office. Maulana Golam Morshed, the upazila Jamaat chief, presided. Local MP Dr. Mosleh Uddin Farid attended as special guest.

“If the referendum verdict is implemented, the path of autocracy in this country will be closed forever,” Rasul said. “National elections will be held on time. We have won a new freedom at the cost of much blood. The people of this country have shed blood time and again but have not tasted real independence. If we can build a corruption-free Bangladesh, ordinary people will be liberated.”

Farid said: “We are working hard for the development of Chougachha and Jhikargachha.”

Others who spoke included upazila Jamaat secretary Maulana Nuruzzaman, assistant secretary and journalist Rahidul Islam Khan, Master Kamal Ahmed, Maulana Gias Uddin, town chief Maulana Abdul Khaleq, Master Imdadul Haque and labor leader Tuhinur Rahman.

Rasul announced Jamaat’s chairman candidates for the 10 unions of the upazila: Jahidul Islam in Fulsara, Maulana Shah Alam in Pashapole, Roknuzzaman in Dhulianee, Maulana Ruhul Quddus in Chougachha, Maulana Abdur Rahman in Jagadishpur, Maulana Nurul Islam in Patibila, Hafez Amin Uddin Khan in Hakimpur, Maulana Gias Uddin in Sworupdaha, Tuhinur Rahman in Narayanpur and Abdul Alim in Sukhpukuria.
