The government is trying to entrench one-party rule by installing its own party loyalists in important administrative posts — including in the banking sector, as university vice-chancellors and as district council chairmen — opposition leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has alleged. He warned that aware citizens would never accept what he called the government’s one-party mindset.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a large workers’ convention held on Friday (19 June) morning at the Central Eidgah ground in Narayanganj city. The convention was organised by Narayanganj city Jamaat-e-Islami.
Addressing party workers, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the Awami League had in the past spoken of the opposition in parliament with utter contempt, attacking the BNP most of all, followed by Jamaat-e-Islami. “Sadly, the present government is taking the same path, branding the opposition with various negative tags,” he said. “But the people of this country are now aware; they no longer believe this political propaganda.”
Warning the government, the opposition leader added, “Try to understand the language and demands of the young generation. Stop walking the Awami League’s old, autocratic path without delay.”
The convention, presided over by Narayanganj city Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Maulana Abdul Jabbar, was also attended by Jamaat-e-Islami central executive council member and MP Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Dhaka South city Amir and MP Nurul Islam Bulbul, and Islami Chhatra Shibir central president Nurul Islam Saddam, along with other senior local and central leaders.
