Iran is moving toward expanding trade through land borders instead of sea routes. The shift in import activity comes as opportunities to move goods through the country’s southern ports have become limited.
As land trade grows, pressure is also increasing on Iran’s border routes with neighboring countries. The heaviest pressure has fallen on the main border route with Turkey, where long lines of cargo trucks have formed. The queues are stretching for several kilometers.
Trucks stuck at the border have to wait for days to transport goods. In some cases, the wait extends to several weeks.
Restrictions on access to southern seaports are disrupting imports. As a result, Iran is relying increasingly on land borders to keep trade moving.
