Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed effective steps to quickly remove unfit, expired and polluting buses, trucks and other vehicles from the capital’s roads. He also ordered automatic traffic-light systems introduced at at least 50 more points in the capital as soon as possible. He gave the directives at a meeting on environmental pollution at the prime minister’s office on Saturday (18 July 2026), which he chaired.

The meeting held detailed discussions on various steps to prevent air and noise pollution, deciding to take quick, effective measures against brick-kiln air pollution, with the prime minister stressing the use of environmentally friendly alternative technology to produce bricks. Effective measures to control noise pollution from excessive horn use in the capital were also discussed, with the prime minister directing law-enforcement agencies to act more strictly, and the meeting discussing how AI technology — like the AI cameras used in traffic management — could be used to control horns.

Present were Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, the prime minister’s special assistant Dr Saimum Parvez, Dhaka South City Corporation administrator Md Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, additional police commissioner (traffic) Md Anisur Rahman, and senior officials of various ministries and agencies.
