Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina surrendered everything to neighboring India’s Delhi in order to cling to power indefinitely.

He said her government trampled the country’s sovereignty into the ground. He said she shed so much blood simply to remain in power, disregarding everyone while maintaining her relationship with the neighboring country.

Rizvi made the remarks Sunday afternoon at a discussion titled “The Spirit of July and the Bangladesh Ahead,” held at the National University Senate Building to mark the second anniversary of the “July Uprising 2024.”

He further said the previous regime’s misrule took many forms — remand, enforced disappearance, killing — there was no crime Sheikh Hasina did not commit. He said no other fascist in the world resembles Sheikh Hasina. Even Hitler and other fascists around the world retained some degree of patriotism — they wanted to prove their countries were the best in the world. But Sheikh Hasina wanted to stay in power even at the cost of selling the country’s independence and sovereignty. That, he said, is why she inflicted every form of oppression on the people.

On the question of Sheikh Hasina returning to the country, Rizvi said fugitive birds never return — Sheikh Hasina, too, will never be able to return. He said she could have returned had she been forced out of the country. Lenin returned, and Imam Khomeini returned, he said, because they did not launder the country’s money abroad, did not take plots of land, and did not embezzle from banks — that is why they were able to return. However, he warned, if there is no unity among us, fascism could try to return in another form.

Speaking as chair of the discussion, National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A S M Amanullah said that to properly honor the memory of July’s martyrs, the National University must be advanced to global standards. He said the university is working with that goal in mind, emphasizing quality education, “learning with happiness,” language education, and skills-based education, while also working on how to integrate modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, into the education system.

The event, chaired by National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A S M Amanullah, was also addressed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Lutfar Rahman, and Treasurer Professor Dr Md Nazmul Hossain.

The event was moderated by Md Aminul Akter, Director of the National University’s Regional Coordination Office, and Nazim Uddin Ahmed, Acting College Inspector.
