The preventive oral cholera vaccine can be given to children older than one year, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said.
He made the comment while inaugurating the Preventive Oral Cholera Vaccination Campaign at the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) auditorium at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.
The health minister said the preventive oral cholera vaccine can be given to children older than one year, with at least a two-week gap required between the two doses. The vaccine can provide protection against cholera for at least three to five years after both doses are taken. More than five million people will be vaccinated in this campaign.
He said the country is having to manage several diseases at once, including measles and dengue, but that there is no cause for concern. He added that, thanks to the city corporation’s efforts, the rate of mosquito population growth in Dhaka has so far remained under control this year.
He called for public cooperation in preventing dengue.
The event was chaired by DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam. The first dose will be administered in designated areas on August 22, with the second dose to follow on September 26.
