Students at government primary schools will start receiving free school uniforms, shoes, socks and school bags from this July-August, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj has said. He gave the information on Monday (8 June) after a meeting at the Ministry of Textiles and Jute at the Secretariat. State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam and State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Islam were present.

Bobby Hajjaj said more than 350,000 students would be brought under the benefit through the pilot project, which will be carried out in several phases. The pilot will begin with the distribution of these items among at least 100,000 students in the first phase, after which the rest will be reached in stages. The target is to complete the entire pilot by this December, with more than 25,000 primary schools covered.

He said that, based on the pilot’s experience and results, full-scale distribution at all government primary schools nationwide could begin from next January. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may inaugurate the programme, the state minister added.
