A student at Barishal University (BU) has alleged that he was ordered to write a teacher’s name 300 times and submit it after misspelling the name in an assignment. The student’s protest post on Facebook sparked wide discussion and criticism among university students.

Saidul Islam Said, a second-semester third-year student in the finance and banking department, misspelled the name of the department’s assistant professor, Mariam Hasna, in an assignment. He was then, the allegation goes, told to write the teacher’s name 300 times and submit it.

Posting a photo on his Facebook account, Saidul Islam Said wrote: “Last night will remain one of the most memorable experiences of my university life. Because of a single letter in the spelling of one word — writing ‘Morium’ instead of ‘Morioum’ — I had to redo the entire text 300 times.” After the post spread on social media, current and former students reacted in mixed ways. Some criticised the punishment as unreasonable, while others pointed to the student’s carelessness. Former students also alleged that the department hands out various such bizarre assignments.

Redwan Sarkar, a former finance and banking student, wrote on Facebook: “I’ve lost count of how many pointless assignments I did. Copying assignments by hand in the name of creativity was practically the rule. Facing various kinds of ragging from teachers is very common in this department.” Another student, Israt Jahan, commented: “A third-year student gets a faculty member’s name wrong and then posts about it too. One should have at least a minimum of sense.”

The university administration did not immediately offer any formal comment on the incident.
