The Israeli air strike that killed Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil and wounded her camera operator Zeinab Faraj earlier this year was “deliberate” and therefore a war crime, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said, according to Al Jazeera.

Khalil, a journalist for the Lebanese outlet Al-Akhbar, was killed on 22 April in the southern town of At-Tiri while reporting on Israeli aggression in southern Lebanon.

HRW said various evidence — including requests from the UN mission in Lebanon and the Red Cross — showed that Israeli forces knew journalists were in the building Israel struck.

The rights group also said that when Israeli forces prevented rescue teams from reaching the journalists’ location, Khalil was very likely still alive.

HRW’s Ramzi Kaiss said in a statement: “The information gathered clearly shows that the Israeli military knew, or should have known, that Faraj and Khalil were civilians, yet it attacked them and then, for hours, prevented paramedics from rescuing them.”
