Time will be sought from the Speaker to announce the schedule for the presidential election, the Election Commission’s senior secretary, Akhtar Ahmed, has said. He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the Election Building today, Sunday.

By convention, the chief election commissioner meets the Speaker before announcing the schedule for a presidential election. Accordingly, the chief election commissioner, A M M Nasir Uddin, will pay a courtesy call on the acting Speaker, Kaiser Kamal.

Meanwhile, all the election commissioners and the senior secretary held an unscheduled meeting at the chief election commissioner’s office today, Sunday, July 26, on announcing the presidential election schedule. The law on the presidential election was reviewed there. It was then decided that a meeting would be held with the Speaker to settle the next steps in announcing the schedule.

By the rules, the president is elected by the votes of members of parliament. For this, the list of voters — that is, the names of the members of parliament — will be sent from the parliament secretariat to the EC secretariat. On that basis the EC will prepare the voter list for the presidential election. The schedule for the election will then be announced. The chief election commissioner will meet the acting Speaker on these matters.

According to the parliament secretariat’s law branch, the Election Commission will send a letter to the Speaker’s office tomorrow, Monday, seeking a meeting.

By convention, Kaiser Kamal is serving as acting Speaker. Earlier, in 2002, when the then Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar took charge as acting president, the then deputy speaker Akhtar Hamid Siddique served as acting Speaker.

In 2013, when President Zillur Rahman died, the then Speaker of parliament, Abdul Hamid, first became acting president and later served two terms as president. At that time the then deputy speaker, Shawkat Ali, served as acting Speaker.
