Repeated bomb explosions in Myanmar’s Rakhine state shook the border areas of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday, as fresh fighting erupted between the Arakan Army and Myanmar’s military junta.
Clashes were reported from Thursday afternoon in the Bolibazar and Kumirkhali areas of Rakhine, across the border from Teknaf’s Whaikhyang and Hnila.
The previous day, airstrikes hit Maungdaw town during the day and at night.
Local resident Abdur Rahman said: “Around midday, we heard loud explosions from the Bolibazar and Kumirkhali areas of Rakhine. The blasts shook houses along the Whaikhyang border. At least seven explosions were heard.”
Sirajul Mostafa Lalu, a ward member in Whaikhyang, said: “About a year ago, there was intense fighting between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar junta across the Whaikhyang border. People in the border area lived in fear during that time. Now fighting has resumed on the Rakhine side, and anxiety has spread among locals again.”
Fisherman Rahmatullah from Hnila’s Maulvibazar said: “I had gone to fish in the Naf River in the morning. Around midday, several loud explosions were heard from the Rakhine border across Maulvibazar. I stopped fishing in fear and returned quickly.”
Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB) commander Lt. Col. Md. Zahirul Islam said: “We are looking into the reports of explosions. The BGB is on alert.”
