True intelligence is revealed not in a person’s words but in their character, patience, self-restraint, gratitude, good company, the keeping of secrets and firm trust in Allah. Real wisdom shows in a person’s thought, character, patience, self-control and good conduct. A truly wise person shapes their life through certain fine habits that lead them to honour in this world and success in the hereafter. The wise are known not by their words but by their character and deeds. Speak less of what is unnecessary, and give your attention to what matters. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” (Bukhari 6018, Muslim 47)
Stay patient and calm in every situation
Not anger or agitation, but patience and self-restraint is the true mark of a strong person. Allah, the Most High, says:
“Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: verse 153)
Build a habit of self-reflection and contemplation
At times, solitude helps a person to recognise their own faults, to remember Allah and to make the right decisions. Allah, the Most High, says:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth … are signs for people of understanding.” (Surah Al-Imran: verse 190)
Define yourself through good deeds, not arguments
Needless argument divides people, but good character and righteous deeds raise a person’s standing. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“I am a guarantor of a house on the outskirts of Paradise for one who gives up argument even when he is in the right.” (Abu Dawud 4800)
Choose the company of righteous and wise people
A person is shaped by their companions, so keep the company of those of good character and stay away from harmful company. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“A person is upon the way of his close friend.” (Abu Dawud 4833, Tirmidhi 2378)
Build a habit of gratitude, not complaint
Whoever gives thanks for Allah’s blessings, Allah increases them in good. Allah, the Most High, says:
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.” (Surah Ibrahim: verse 7)
Guard your family’s private matters
To protect a family’s honour and mutual trust, private matters should not be disclosed needlessly. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“Among the worst of people in rank before Allah on the Day of Resurrection is the man who is intimate with his wife, and she with him, and then he spreads her secret.” (Muslim 1437)
Trust in Allah in times of hardship
Trials are bound to come in life. Patience, a cheerful face and trust in Allah are a believer’s strength. Allah, the Most High, says:
“And whoever relies upon Allah — He is sufficient for him.” (Surah At-Talaq: verse 3)
If we can make these qualities a part of our lives, then — God willing — the path to an honourable life in this world and to Allah’s pleasure in the hereafter will be made easy.
