Six women were detained on suspicion of theft while allegedly stealing a patient’s money and mobile phone at the 250-bed Meherpur General Hospital, police said. They were later handed over to Meherpur Sadar police.
The incident happened on Tuesday, July 21, afternoon in front of the pediatric specialist’s chamber at the hospital.
According to witnesses and hospital sources, Rani Khatun, a resident of Dhala village in Gangni upazila, came to the hospital with her child for treatment. While she was standing in the queue in front of the pediatrician’s chamber, the six detained women allegedly stole money from her bag. When they tried to take her mobile phone, she noticed and cried out. Hospital security staff, patients’ relatives and bystanders detained the six women, and Meherpur Sadar police later took them into custody.
The detained women are initially said to be residents of various areas of Jamalpur district. The process of legal action against them is under way.
Hospital sources said complaints of theft and snatching of money, mobile phones and other valuables from patients and their relatives had been reported for some time across the hospital’s wards and outpatient department. With the group’s members caught after Tuesday’s incident, patients and relatives felt relieved.
Meherpur Sadar police officer-in-charge Muhaddid Morshed Chowdhury said: “The public detained six women from the hospital on suspicion of theft. They have been brought to the station and are being questioned. But no one has filed any complaint on the matter. Action will be taken subject to investigation.”
