Doctors in Sri Lanka have surgically removed a “giant” bladder stone weighing 3.1 kilograms from a man’s body. They say it is the largest bladder stone ever removed through surgery.

The surgery was performed last week on the 55-year-old man at Trincomalee General Hospital in the country’s eastern region. The stone weighed roughly as much as a full-term newborn baby. In size, it resembled an ostrich egg, measuring about 17 centimeters in length.

Doctors said the man had been admitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke. During treatment, doctors noticed he was having trouble urinating. Further examination revealed the presence of a stone in his bladder.

Prahalathan Balakrishnan, the physician who led the surgery, said it was the largest bladder stone ever removed surgically. He said the patient was doing “very well” after the operation. Doctors believe the stone had been in the man’s bladder for roughly five to ten years. He remains under treatment at the hospital, where doctors are also addressing his other health issues.

How bladder stones form

Bladder stones form when various minerals in urine accumulate and harden into crystals. This typically happens when the bladder is not fully emptied, allowing concentrated urine to collect. Under these conditions, minerals can crystallize and gradually grow into stones.

Very small stones can be like grains of sand and often pass out of the body on their own. But stones larger than one centimeter can obstruct urine flow and may require treatment. Bladder stones larger than four centimeters are generally considered massive.

What was the previous record

According to Guinness World Records, a 1.9-kilogram stone was removed from a patient’s bladder in Brazil in 2003. That stone measured 17.9 centimeters in length.

The newly removed stone in Sri Lanka measures roughly 17 centimeters in length and weighs 3.1 kilograms. Doctors are therefore claiming it as a new record for bladder stone removal.
