A rally to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held in Mirsarai upazila, Chattogram, organised by the upazila’s Jamaat-e-Islami youth and sports division.

On Friday afternoon, participants marched along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway through the upazila town centre.

The event was presided over by upazila youth division president Lokman Hossain. Anwar Siddiq Chowdhury, president of the Chattogram North district youth and sports division, attended as chief guest. Upazila Amir Nurul Kabir and other local party leaders were present as special guests.

Organisers said the programme was held to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of drug abuse and to send a message about building a healthy, disciplined and drug-free society. Participants chanted anti-drug slogans throughout the march.

At a gathering following the rally, speakers said drug abuse had spread to all levels of society, with disputes and even killings within families linked to the need for money to fund addiction. They warned that if the government failed to take effective action to eradicate drugs, the country’s conscious youth would take to the streets in protest.
