50 soldiers killed, 24 captured in rebel attack in Mali

At least 50 soldiers have been killed in an attack by an armed Tuareg rebel group in northern Mali, in the West African country. At least 24 more soldiers were captured, local and military sources said. The sources told AFP on Sunday that the soldiers’ convoy was attacked as they were withdrawing from the strategically important northern town of Anefis.

A local representative close to the ruling military junta said: “The casualties are very high. More than 50 soldiers have been killed. At least 24 have been captured.” According to local sources, it was one of the deadliest attacks on Mali’s army in recent years.
