Malaysian immigration authorities detained 200 foreign nationals, including Bangladeshi citizens, during a raid at the Taman Maluri night market in Kuala Lumpur.

The operation, codenamed “Op Kutip,” was conducted after two weeks of surveillance following complaints from local residents. The raid was a joint effort by the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya immigration department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Immigration department director Hamsha Injau said officials checked the documents of 500 people, including 407 foreign nationals and 93 Malaysians. Of those, 200 foreigners were detained — 125 men and 75 women — from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, and India.

The operation began at around 6 pm. Many foreigners attempted to flee when they spotted immigration officers. Some managed to hide initially but were later found by officials.

Injau said the detained individuals face various immigration violations, including lack of valid travel documents, overstayed visas, abuse of social visit passes, and breaches of visa or immigration pass conditions.

He said similar operations would be conducted at other night markets across Kuala Lumpur, particularly those with high concentrations of foreign visitors. He added that action would also be taken against employers, business operators, brokers, syndicates, and those harboring undocumented foreign nationals.
