Two men — AFM Ahsanul Habib (51) and Md Nuruzzaman (43) — have been arrested for alleged involvement in irregularities and the supply of substandard, rotten food under the school feeding (mid-day meal) project for primary students. They were arrested on Monday (8 June) from the Chandmari area of Madaripur municipality, and were sent to court after preliminary questioning confirmed their involvement. The education ministry gave the information in a press release on Tuesday (9 June).

The release said Ahsanul Habib’s home is in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon upazila and Nuruzzaman’s in Barishal’s Bakerganj upazila. Police arrested them following a case filed against the establishment involved in the irregularities. The two were directly involved in food-supply operations for students under the school feeding project as responsible officers of a firm named Samata Traders. Based on investigation findings, Madaripur Sadar police arrested them after preliminary confirmation of their role and responsibility in the supply of spoiled and inedible food items.

Several students fell ill after eating mid-day meals at schools in Madaripur Sadar and Chapainawabganj Sadar upazilas, which was widely reported in the media. The government then decided on swift and strict action against those responsible. Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon asked the deputy commissioners of Chapainawabganj and Madaripur to form committees including the civil surgeons, and requested quick action against those involved in the irregularities.
