Five members of an expatriate’s family have fallen unconscious after eating breakfast in Jamalpur’s Madarganj. Those who fell unconscious are the expatriate’s wife (40), her two sons (23 and 17), her daughter and her three-year-old granddaughter, of Charnangla village in Balijuri union of the upazila.
The incident took place on Thursday evening, July 23. All of them were later admitted to the Madarganj upazila health complex at about 9 p.m.
According to local sources, the expatriate’s eldest son has a shop at the local Bandher Matha bazar. When the shop, which was due to open as on every other day, was seen shut until the evening on Thursday, local traders grew suspicious. Traders from the market and locals then went to the family’s house and found all the family members unconscious. They were rescued and taken to hospital at about 9 p.m.
After regaining consciousness, the wife said that from the morning, after eating food and drinking tube-well water, everyone had a headache and fell into a deep sleep. She said she could not say what happened after that.
The medical officer on duty at the upazila health complex, Dr Zakia, said they were currently under treatment in hospital. It is preliminarily thought that something sedative had been mixed into the food or water.
