Mahespur upazila administration observes National Fisheries Week 2026

Mahespur upazila administration held the inaugural ceremony and discussion session for National Fisheries Week 2026. The event was held Sunday, August 16, at 10 a.m. in the upazila parishad auditorium. Various National Fisheries Week programs are being held from August 16 to 18, 2026.

Member of Parliament Motiar Rahman (Jhenaidah-3) attended as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony and discussion session. Also present as guests were Mahespur Upazila Fisheries Officer Anwar Hossain, Fisheries Officer Din Islam, Mahespur Upazila BRDB Officer Bahaul Islam, Md Abdul Alim of the fisheries office, Fatepur Baor Manager Mohammad Ripon Hossain, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Mahespur municipal unit Amir Md Nawfel Hossain, along with local leaders. The inaugural ceremony and discussion session were held under the chairmanship of Upazila Executive Officer Sajjad Hossain.

Speaking as chief guest, MP Motiar Rahman said Mahespur-Kotchandpur is an important region for Bangladesh. He said that by properly utilizing fisheries resources, the country could meet domestic demand and also generate economic benefits through exports. The MP cited a statistic that the Boluhar Fisheries Project alone accounts for 36 percent of fry production in Bangladesh, playing a significant role in the national economy. He said the region is surrounded by nearly seven rivers, including the Bhairab, Teesta, Karatoya, and Kapotaksho. He said that by tapping into the region’s abundant canals, wetlands, and baors, and increasing and properly maintaining fish production, the country could meet its domestic protein needs while also prospering economically through exports.

During the discussion session, recognition awards were presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to fish production, marketing, business, and to new entrepreneurs making significant social and economic contributions in the area. Chief guest MP Motiar Rahman presented a recognition award to Engineer Zahurul Haque among the entrepreneurs. Engineer Zahurul Haque hails from Natun Kola village in Kajirber union. This up-and-coming young man has been contributing to various social and economic initiatives in his area, from fish production business to youth employment. Recognition awards were also presented to various other entrepreneurs.
