After France’s 2-0 defeat by Spain sent them out of the World Cup, captain Kylian Mbappe put the blame on his own side. Speaking after the match, he said: “What we did tonight was in no way of World Cup semifinal standard. We failed on both the technical and the tactical side.”
Mbappe added: “Even after we won the ball back, our attacking play, our passing and our first touch — none of it was worthy of a World Cup semifinal. To be honest, we didn’t have what it takes to reach a World Cup final.” Against Spain, Mbappe failed to register a single shot on target; France’s star was effectively kept quiet throughout by the firm resistance of Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte and Unai Simon.
