Five percent of students to get free education

Five percent of students at the secondary and college level will be given the opportunity to study free of charge in the 2026-27 fiscal year. The finance ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division will implement the programme, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said in the proposed budget.

The finance minister gave the information on Thursday while presenting the 2026-27 budget in Parliament.

For the 2026-27 fiscal year, a total of Tk 57,301 crore has been allocated to secondary and higher education. This is about Tk 10,000 crore more than last fiscal year’s budget. The allocation for this sector last year was Tk 46,738 crore.

Among the 10 projects of the Secondary and Higher Education Division are the recruitment of teachers to various posts to fill teacher shortages at the secondary and college level, the construction of educational institutions and the granting of new MPO status, free study for 5 percent of students, and free school uniforms for 1,50,000 students in backward areas.

In addition, the project will build 4,000 new academic buildings at secondary educational institutions and set up 500 new educational institutions in backward areas.

The finance minister proposed a national budget of Tk 9,38,000 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The total budget for education is Tk 1,36,620 crore, which is 2 percent of total GDP. Primary education received Tk 46,738 crore, and Tk 18,459 crore was allocated for technical and madrasa education.
