Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna has called for ensuring judicial independence along with making the state’s overall services accessible to the public. He made the demand at a discussion session at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Thursday (July 9) marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising.

Speaking at the discussion organized by Amar Bangladesh Party, guests criticized the government’s foot-dragging on implementing the July charter and fundamental state reforms.

Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad said democracy cannot be strengthened while state structures remain weak. National Citizen Party member secretary Akhter Hossain called on the government to implement the outcome of the referendum.

During the event, Rokeya Begum grew emotional recalling the sacrifice of her seven-year-old son, Jabir, during the July uprising.
