Executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) Atish Sarkar has cut multiple dams within a 4-km stretch at Subharatkati in Panchakaran union of Bagerhat’s Morrelganj. He cut the dams at various points along with local residents on Thursday (11 June) afternoon. Teligati union land officer Bishnu Pada Das and surveyor Anwar Hossain were among those present.
For 10 to 12 years, local influential people had blocked water flow with multiple dams along the 4-km stretch to farm fish. With the dams removed, about 300 bighas of farmland across five villages — including Mistri village in Panchakaran union — came under double cropping, freeing thousands of people in the five villages from long-standing waterlogging.
