Residents along Bangladesh’s border have detained an Indian citizen, Dipankar Gop (35), over the alleged taking away of a 78-year-old Bangladeshi man, Tamiz Uddin, from the Birajot area of Panchagarh Sadar upazila. A flag meeting was held at the company-commander level between the BGB and India’s BSF, but the matter was not resolved.

On Saturday morning, residents detained the Indian citizen after he entered a Bangladeshi sugarcane field in the area of sub-pillar 12 of main pillar 742 on the Birajot border in Satmera union of the upazila. His home is in Rajganj police station of Jalpaiguri district, India.

Locals said that on Wednesday morning, the elderly farmer Tamiz Uddin had gone to the Birajot border to look for a lost cow. Members of India’s border force, the BSF, from the Chaulhati camp then took him away from the border.

Tamiz Uddin’s son, Azahar, said: “My father is hard of hearing and cannot move about properly. When he went near the border to look for the cow, the BSF took him away.”

In response, on Saturday morning, when the Indian citizen entered a Bangladeshi sugarcane field while working at a border tea garden and tried to break sugarcane, residents of the border area detained him. Locals say the Indian citizen will be returned only once the Bangladeshi citizen is handed back.
