Two people have been killed in separate lightning strikes in Netrokona Sadar upazila. The incidents occurred on Sunday (June 14) morning in Sapmara village of Amtala union and Kutubpur village of Kailati union in the Sadar upazila.
The two killed were Jamal Munshi, 55, a madrasa teacher and son of Nantu Mia of Sapmara village, and Sabuj Mia, 53, a CNG driver and son of the late Joynal Abedin of Kutubpur village.
Jamal Munshi, the madrasa teacher, had gone to catch fish at about 6:30 a.m. after offering Fajr prayers, according to reports. He was seriously injured when lightning struck during rain. Locals later recovered his body.
Meanwhile, the CNG driver Sabuj Mia had gone at the same time to lift a fishing net set in a marsh, in the rain. He was injured by lightning in the marsh. After the rain stopped, locals recovered him and took him to the Sadar hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
The district administration’s relief fund provided 20,000 taka in cash to each of the two families for burial expenses.
Al-Mamun Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Netrokona Model police station, told reporters that unnatural death cases had been recorded in connection with the deaths of the two people from lightning in the Sadar upazila.
