Mohammad Sumon (42), a worker at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit, died under mysterious circumstances at a residence on Nazimuddin Road in Bangshal, in the capital. His wife has been taken into police custody for questioning over the incident.
He was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency department in critical condition around 1pm on Tuesday, where the attending physician declared him dead.
The incident occurred earlier, around 11:30am.
Sumon was the son of Nabi Mia of Dalugachh Bazar area in Kamalganj upazila, Habiganj district. He lived in a rented flat on the fourth floor of a four-story building near Anaras Mosque in Zamindar Goli on Nazimuddin Road, Bangshal, and worked as a daily-basis employee at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit.
Nasima Begum, his wife, who brought him to the hospital, said her husband used yaba. The previous night, she said, he took Tk 1,500 from her to buy yaba and used it while sitting in the bathroom that night.
She claimed that on Tuesday morning, an altercation broke out between the couple over the drug use. At one point, she said, Sumon struck her hand with a sharp weapon he was holding. The same weapon later caused a serious wound to the left side of Sumon’s chest. He was then rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, Sumon’s first wife, Dolly Akter, arriving at Dhaka Medical, alleged that Sumon had long been addicted to drugs and that there had been an ongoing family dispute. She alleged that Sumon was murdered in the incident.
Mohammad Faruk, inspector in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed Sumon’s death citing the physician. The body has been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy, and the matter has been reported to the relevant police station.
He added that Nasima Begum, the wife, has been taken into police custody for questioning about the incident.
