Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman has said the government should not forget “17 years of persecution”.

“We are seeing nothing new at all. You are now making an exact photocopy of what the earlier fascists did. You too are carrying out repression against the opposition just as before,” he said.

He made the remarks at an event at the Press Club on Sunday.

The Jamaat Amir said: “Why are you disregarding the verdict of 70 percent of the people? It was precisely the disregarding of the 1970 election that led to 1971.”

“BNP sometimes needles us over the 1996 election,” he said. “Yet it was because of our selfless support in 1991 that BNP was able to form the government.”

He also commented that party loyalists had been placed in a neutral institution like the Election Commission. BNP could not be reached for comment on his remarks.
