Private tuition has become an epidemic in the country, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj has said. He said that because of excessive reliance on private tuition, many students are being deprived of the education they need in the classroom. Students must therefore be ensured the necessary teaching and education within school itself.
He made the remarks on Sunday (9 August) morning at an event organised by UNICEF at the Sheraton hotel in the capital.
The state minister said visible change would be brought to the country’s education system within the next five years. To that end, priority would be given to strengthening the foundation of primary education, to vocational education, and to students’ overall development.
Complaining that many students cannot properly master basic subjects even after finishing primary education, the state minister said the future education system must be made more vocational. To this end, a move would be taken to set up maths labs in primary schools in phases.
The state minister announced a plan to make sports compulsory at the primary and secondary levels. He stressed building sports into an integral part of education for students’ physical and mental development.
