Three people have died under treatment of burns suffered when crowds set fire to the homes of the accused in the rape and killing of a teenage girl in Pabna Sadar upazila. None of the accused was at home at the time of the arson; all of the burned were neighbours, local people and onlookers. Two died on Tuesday (9 June) morning at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, after one died at the same hospital on Monday (8 June) afternoon. The three are Sumon Sheikh, son of Tajir Uddin Sheikh of East Raghabpur in Bhanrara union of Sadar upazila; Saiful Islam Sabbir, son of Shakur Hossain of neighbouring Natunpara; and Sapu, son of the late Yusuf of the same area.

According to police and local residents, the teenage girl’s body was recovered from the Padma river at Bhanrara on Wednesday (3 June) afternoon and buried the following day. After the burial, an enraged crowd set fire to the accused men’s homes; a gas cylinder in one house exploded, burning several people nearby, who were rescued and admitted to hospital.

Pabna Sadar police OC Tariqul Islam said three people had died under treatment in Dhaka — one yesterday and two today — and that legal proceedings are under way. The girl’s sack-bound body had been recovered from the Padma at Pirpur in Bhanrara union; three people, including the girl’s reported boyfriend Naim, were arrested over the killing, and police say the accused confessed to the rape and killing after arrest.
