The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change issued a notification to that effect on 7 June. The government awards the honour each year to individuals and institutions in recognition of work in environmental conservation, pollution prevention, research, and environmental education and outreach.

On the award, BJRI director general Dr Nargis Akter thanked and expressed gratitude to the agriculture minister, the environment, forest and climate change minister, and the secretaries of both ministries, and congratulated scientists, officers and staff at all levels of the BJRI, saying the BJRI family is proud of the achievement.
